I've told you about my hate of Power Rankings before, here and here. So knowing my opinion, check this out.

I don't mind Michael David Smith at Fanhouse. He's a good investigative blogger and writes 2 million posts a day at places all around the world wide web. But this is awful.

He put out Fanhouse's latest NFL Power Rankings. Giants 1, Steelers 2, Titans 3, Ravens 4. Lovely praise for Pittsburgh:

- "There haven't been many more impressive performances in the NFL this season than the one the Steelers' defense put together against the Patriots on Sunday."

But complete horseshit (mini horseshit?) about the Ravens:

- "...we shouldn't overlook what a strong year Haloti Ngata is having for the Ravens. Baltimore has the best defense in the NFL, and no one deserves more credit for that than Ngata."

Really? Let's look at those NFL stats again.

Looks like a clean sweep to me. Just a little more research next time, MDS.

He's using Football Outsider's rankings, where the Steelers and Ravens are neck and neck, but the rat birds are slightly ahead. On the whole, FO is a pretty good metric, a little better than straight stats.

drobviousso - Yeah, I know FO and AOL are pretty much in bed with each other, so MDS is using the numbers that his employer probably pushes moreso. But to use the phrase "best in the NFL" after using weighted stats that have no bearing on the league, well...that's kinda weak in my opinion. I like FO, but I'll stick to the stats that actually have meaning to the league they represent. Now, if Baltimre was #1 on both FO and the NFL stats, I'd let MDS use that phrase. But with a split between Pittsburgh on the NFL side and Baltimore on the FO side, it's outrageous to say that the Ravens are "the best."

You do know that he actually did write for FO until this season, right?

Yes. He also writes at PFT...does that give him license to say that "Florio is the best NFL mind out there?"

Look, all I'm saying is that in writing about the NFL, it comes off as misleading if he mentions one team as the best defense when they are, in fact, not. Joe Fan, or Marc above, will read that, then check out actual NFL stats and scratch their head. FO is fine, but MDS should've at least made mention that the Ravens are the "best defense in the NFL according to FO." Because they're not the "best defense in the NFL." No one is recognizing them as such aside from one stats source that uses weighted values and algorithms that don't exist outside of their sphere.
