This Dude's Hair Is The Key To The Penguins' Season

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

I don't want to get ahead of myself and start making claims that "THE SEASON IS TURNED AROUND," but in this instance, it's acceptable.

We have huuuge games coming up this weekend against Philly and Washington, and if we can scrape a few points out of these contests, then hopefully the Pens can pull back into the playoff picture. The Pensblog pulled out Hacksaw to re-ignite the team...I'll point to someone that was at the game last night.

This dude watched the Pens beat the Canadiens first hand, and his hair will be the spark that helps the Pens make the playoffs. Or it'll be the the reason we crash and burn epically. I still haven't decided.

But if you thought I'd go a day at PSAMP without mentioning a dude with a coif this sweet, then you really don't understand what PSAMP is all about. Good for Bylsma for getting the guys to play well, good for Sergei for getting on the board, good for Geno for flying around like a madman last night. But good for this guy for bringing that hair to the arena.

We all appreciate it.

I'm an idiot.

These Animals Look Thrilled

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

Maybe it's the Super Bowl hangover. Maybe it's that I'm swamped at work. But dammit if I'm going to let you come to PSAMP and go away empty handed.

These are pretty much the animal eqivalents of me right now. Thank you, Cute Overload.

And thanks to my sister Kate for sending them to me.

Let's Embarrass Mike Tomlin Some More!

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

By now, you've probably seen the awesome picture of Mike Tomlin's flattop fade in his college identification picture (through either OFTOT, Deadspin or the P-G). But now, after showing a little blogger initiative, I've come across a few more younger-Mike pics that we can all laugh at in one way or another.

The College Athlete:

Where's the mini-fro, Mike? What, you didn't want it to get dented in your helmet like it repeatedly does now with your headset?

The...uh...Ugly Jeans, Thin Belt, Awesome Shirt Combo:

Man, I know you were in school during the early 90s, but did you really have to dress the part? Props for standing next to a kid wearing Back and Gold, though.

Disgusting, Mike. Be glad you won the Super Bowl...not everyone gets a free pass on multi-colored vertical stripes.

Big Ben is a Human Wrecking Ball

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

It's amazing how much a unique-looking fatass like Ben Roethlisberger looks like so many weird people. Remember Ben in Rock Band 2?

Well, Ben also resembles a dude on one of my favorite shows, Human Wrecking Balls on G4. The HWBs are Paul and Craig Pumphrey, dudes who have made their name by, well, breaking things with their bodies. Craig is a balding oldass, but his younger brother Paul, known for his shoulder ram, is a complete monster.

The premise of the show is to let these guys go up against man-made things like airplanes, cars, offices, bars, movie theaters...and just try and destroy everything with only their fists, feet, shoulders, heads, etc. More or less, the show kicks major ass.

Paul (above, right), also bears a striking similarity to Big Ben Roethlisberger. If Big Ben can axe-kick, punch or shoulder ram through the Cardinals on Sunday, the metamorphosis is complete.

Badass video below will let you non-watchers in on the sweetness of this show. Oh, and new episode tonight at 10:30 PM. I really can't wait.

The Thirstbuster is Money

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

I know Tampa isn't really cold, but if this dude can somehow tweak his invention to serve beer, he'd be the hit of any Super Bowl XLIII tailgate.

Some inventions are downright crazy. Octa-bongs, motorized beer coolers, wiffle bats as beer cups...they do little more than blow your mind. This guy had some damn initiative, using 4 1/2 hours to make something to keep him and his friends warm during cold Steelers pre-games.

I don't know if I'd go with the name Thirstbuster, though. I usually only drink hot chocolate to warm myself up, not to quench my thirst. Now, if he can rig up a liquor or beer tap (maybe even some Kool-Aid or something else, too), then that beast is a definite Thirstbuster. For now, I'd stick with HotLiquidGunPack or something.

And that's why I'm not an inventor/namer.

James Harrison > You

Remember when James Harrison used to be number 42? As in, before he was cut by the team and signed to the practice squad in 2002?

I only post this because my buddy Bob and I love the numbers 14 and 42 for some reason. Makes us giggle. They're just fun numbers to say.

Pre-Silverback is plotting his eventual conquest of the DMVP award.

Monday Morning Chrysler New Yorker

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

Guys, we just punched our ticket to the Super Bowl with that 23-14 win. Through the long year, countless injuries and a ridiculous schedule, our Steelers kept doing work to ensure that the Hunt trophy made it to Pittsburgh.

And now the team is about to do everything in its power to respect the honor of the Hunt trophy, and represent the AFC as only the Steelers can.

Look, you know how the team did, I know how the team did...so there's gonna be no real rankings. We just won the AFC, so any negative rankings would be stupid. While there were a few bonehead plays (and calls), the end result went as well as could be expected.

Take some time to let it all sink in, 'cos this is about to be a long-ass two weeks. Hit up the comments section with anyone you wanna praise or hate on, I don't care. Santonio, Ben, Berger, Troy? Every one of 'em contributed something on a cold night in January, which will hopefully pay huge dividends on a warm night in Tampa in February.

Thanks for a fantastic season, Steelers. Do work once more!

Pittsburgh Zoo Animals Will Show You What's Up

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

I guess the Pittsburgh Zoo didn't take too kindly to the fact that stupid Ravens fans were trying to snake our idea of getting team support from animals.

So we got elephants and sea lions, bitches!

At first, I'm thinking, "What does an elephant eating a Here We Go, Steelers sign have to do with supporting the team?" Then, I quit caring about that part because sea lions start furiously twirling Terrible Towels with their mouths. So I smiled really hard and forgot about the sign.

I can watch those sea lions spin around about a million more times. This has severely lessened my anxiety about the upcoming game.

Carl Joseph Rules

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

I guess this is "Endorse Other People Day" at PSaMP. What with HHR before and Carl Joseph now.

I recently exchanged notes with Carl, a man you probably have never heard about. Unless you saw him on sites like Deadspin and With Leather back in November. Carl is an amazing athlete that you need to know about.

"Born into poverty on a north Florida tobacco farm in 1961, Carl Joseph didn't stand much of a chance in life, even if he'd had a left leg. But through strength in God and unyielding perseverance, he led not only a normal life, but an extraordinary one.

When he removed his bulky prosthesis or dropped his crutches to play sports, he morphed from a gimp into a powerful competitor. In going where no one-legged human had gone before, he sacked quarterbacks, dunked basketballs and soared to victories in the high jump...by hopping on one leg!

In his heroic journey, he transformed himself from the object of pity and ridicule as a child to one of respect and awe in high school, winning over incredulous couches at each hop along the way.

The improbable athletic exploits of this bashful honor student were credited with bringing Madison's black and white communities together during the tense early years of forced integration."

It's not everyday that you hear inspirational stories of one-legged athletes defying the odds. It's even rarer when the story actually relates to Pittsburgh.

In the early 80s, Pitt football coach Jackie Sherrill brought Carl in for a tryout. I asked Carl to recall his time in Pittsburgh for use here. The following is from Carl himself:

"I first met Coach Sherrill, Mark May and Dan Marino when they unexpectedly showed up in my little hometown of Madison, FL, to take part in "Carl Joseph Appreciation Day" in May of 1980. Coach Sherrill then invited me to fall football camp to be a member of the team and inspire his players.

I was at Pitt for about five weeks. I was allowed to suit up and take part in exercises, warmups and drills, but no contact. I was treated as part of the team and had the same rules as the players. The player I was closest with at that time was Rickey Jackson. He showed me a lot of Pittsburgh and he gave me the name "Jackie Sherrill's Boy" because he felt Coach gave me more freedom. That may have been true, but I really couldn't do anything with that freedom. My mobility at Pitt was severely limited by the hills. I wore an artificial leg on campus and had several falls, which was a humiliating thing for me.

So while I loved my time with the Panthers, I was glad to get back to the flat farmland of northern Florida. I don't know how much my presence at Pitt inspired the players, but they did have an 11-1 season."

Sherrill was touched by Carl enough to write a letter of recommendation for the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, for which Carl was recently nominated. Hopefully, the love Carl has recently gotten from the blogosphere will help in the selection process. Carl and the other nominees should find out the results next month.

Below is video of Carl. PSaMP endorses Carl's selection into the Florida High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame!

Dogs Love That Steelers Gear NFL Shop Commercial, Too

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

Seriously, what is with that damn lamp?

Back in October, we found out about some little kid who loved to lip-sync to the Steelers gear NFL Shop commercial...the one with assloads of Steelers merch and a plain, boring table lamp.

Now, we have a dog who has a similar reaction to the commercial. Sure, dogs might be a little behind toddlers on the brain function scale, but they sure do love that commercial just as much. I don't know if its the lamp, the Steelers, the opera music...but its definitely something. I'm gonna go with the Steelers, since this is a Pittsburgh blog and all.

Is this a theme now? When can we expect a chorus line of insects chirping to this commercial?

Site News: PSaMP Will Liveblog Puppy Bowl V!

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

So, the past few weeks of the NFL season have predictably brought on postseason talk, with teams jockeying for playoff position. This is only gonna get more intense as the regular season nears its end. Then, once the playoffs start, we'll be hearing about the Super Bowl nonstop.

The Steelers will inevitably play in the Super Bowl, so I'll be around a television all day on February 1st. Which brings me to the point of this post.

FIVES ON LIVEBLOGGING PUPPY BOWL V!

I wanted to do it last year for Pupy Bowl IV, but didn't have the time. But dammit, I'm staking claim to the only Puppy Bowl live blog that will matter come early February '09. The NY Post tried to do it last year, and the attempt was cheap. We're going all out for Puppy Bowl V here at PSaMP, with cuteness overload everywhere you look.

I felt today was good enough for the announcement, seeing as major networks are announcing television strategies to counteract the Super Bowl. Puppy Bowl has will be a perfect fit here, seeing my love for cool little critters 'n all.

I'll be re-announcing my liveblog plans when Puppy Bowl gets closer, but if you'd like to be re-informed via email, hit me up and I'll get you on a email chain.

Remember, the definitive Puppy Bowl V liveblog will be here at PSaMP.

Toddlers Love That Steelers Gear NFL Shop Commercial

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

Every time that NFL Shop commercial with all the Steelers gear comes on, I'm immediately reminded of our [Unnamed] Steelers Pregame Show set. Video of said commercial is below.

I don't know why, but the toddler in the above video is killing me. And I'm one to usually hate on movies/commercials or anything that has kids digitally talking. I guess this one works because it's (sorta) the real deal. Well, as real as a lip-synching toddler could be.

And sorry if this tyke is an infant or a baby or squirt instead of a toddler. I really don't know the difference.

Here's the video/song that kid is destroying.

Georges Who?

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

Don't get me wrong, I had a massive man-crush on Georges Laraque during his tenure with the Penguins. Probably still do, despite him playing in Canada now.

However, some recent fights by Penguins newcomers Eric Godard and Paul Bissonnette will help fans get over BGL pretty quick. Check out the two destroy Riley Cote and Matt Bradley respectively in the past two games.

Monsters.

First-Week Review of Versus' Sports Soup

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

You know how you never know what to expect outta something until you see it? Sports Soup on Versus fell right along these lines.

Let's explain. Last week, I was invited to meet with Matt Iseman, host of the new sports and comedy show along with two other bloggers. Matt and the channel were really intent on getting information and feedback from the untamed world of the sports blogs. And that's more than enough to pique my interest.

In person, Matt and the Versus people were great, but this was before the show aired. Could that translate to on-air success?

Look...I'm a blogger. Instant gratification is the name of the game. I exist in a world of Youtube videos, toilet jokes and stuff in the sports world that makes me laugh. I'm all for watching 15 year old America's Funniest Home Videos reruns. If I tune to a late-night sports highlight show...I want the clips, not the fluff. If I find something in the sports world that makes me giggle, it's getting a place of honor on my site.

Which makes Sports Soup appealing to sports bloggers like me. The show is what you could expect a sports and humor blog to look like on television.

And that's why Sports Soup came through in the clutch. Matt made it clear when we met, the show isn't hard-hitting journalism, and no news is broken. It's a place to show James Brown being ridiculously cordial, thank you so very much, or awkward pauses between auto and horse racing announcers. The first week introduced the show to the audience, and let viewers know what they can expect from here on out.

I think anyone who saw the first week and who understands the format will be back often. We're a week in, and the show already stands out as funny, unique and promising.

I Was Right, You Were Wrong. Steelers Ownership Likely To Stay With Dan Rooney

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

Looks like the ownership issues surrounding the Steelers and Rooney family are nearing a completion. And I called it back in July.

Take it away, NYT:

...at least two of the [Rooney] brothers have recently tilted toward selling to Dan Rooney.

Rooney and his son Art II met with the league’s finance committee last week to update it on their offer for the team, which includes outside investors who have not been publicly identified. Each of the five brothers owns 16 percent of the team, and N.F.L. rules mandate that one person own at least 30 percent.

Last month, the four younger brothers rejected a bid from the hedge fund billionaire and Steelers fan Stanley Druckenmiller, who had offered an all-cash deal to buy out their shares of the team. That decision followed a meeting of all five brothers with Commissioner Roger Goodell, after which Goodell made clear that the owners of the other 31 N.F.L. teams would do everything possible to ensure that Dan Rooney retained control of the team — an indication that the owners, who must approve the sale, would reject any other suitor.

...

“Dan Rooney made it extremely clear that he was not going to be involved in the gambling business moving forward if he was successful in being able to complete this transaction,” Goodell said. He added, “That is important to our ownership because it is one of the rules that they are not in compliance with.”

Before the season, I had this to say about the struggles:

It seems that Dan is just trying to buy his brothers' shares in the team. Said brothers have more of an interest in other Rooney family investments, mostly gambling. This would rectify several ownership confusions.

First, it would separate the team from any gambling enterprises, something Dan is really trying for. That's what a classy, proactive owner does, solves discrepancies before someone else brings up the issue and creates a non-story controversy of the Steelers being linked to gambling.

Also, this would allow Dan to adhere to NFL rules, which apparently the Rooneys were not doing to the fullest extent. Each of the 5 brothers owns 16% of the team. NFL rules state that the majority owner needs at least a 30% share. No one questioned the Rooney's since 5 shares of 16% all came from the same family.

I see this going down one of two ways:

1. Dan buys out his brothers' shares, keeping the team on his side of the family while selling his stakes in the other business ventures (gambling) to his brothers.

or

2. Dan buys out his brothers' shares, and sells a minority stake in the team to an unrelated buyer, most likely Stanley Druckenmiller, the billionaire head of Duquesne Capital Management.

And if Rooney sells the team outright, you can call me any insult in the book.

Test my foresight again, assholes. I can't believe some people actually believed the Steelers would be in hands that didn't belong to Dan Rooney and his kin. The Stanley Druckenmiller fiasco was a hot topic at the time, so it only made my worst-case scenario beliefs.

So, phew...you don't get to insult me and my predictions.

The Steelers seem to be remaining with Dan Rooney and his family, and we can go back to only worrying about the team and who we play each week.
