Craig Wilson Is A Pirate...Again

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

Are you kidding me?

Everyone who thought Craig Wilson's time with the Buccos was long gone...you fail.

Only the Pirates would sign a chronically-underachieving strikeout machine after he didn't catch on in New York, Atlanta and Cincinnati. Hell, we could use some depth in the minors...why not take Craig Wilson back? He can hit pinch-hit home runs with the best of 'em!

When we traded Wilson for Shawn Chacon, I had a sneaking feeling that Wilson would be back. He's the type of guy that might attract some attention by hitting 29 homers in a season, but isn't the unbelievable talent that would warrant a long-term deal. So, after pit stops in both the national and American Leagues, Wilson is back home in Pittsburgh.

I think I'd rather have Bonds.

In other Pirates news, Master X was named the NL Player of the Week. It might be a stretch to find a picture of him between two broads.

UPDATE: Maybe not.

Classic Mini Pony of the Day 4-8-08

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

(originally published on 4-9-07)

So here is the Mini Pony of the Holiday Weekend. I've been busy with work and the holiday, so I apologize for the lack of posts over the past few days. This mini pony was so sweet that it was the only pony that could encompass April 7th, 8th and 9th. The MPotD will be updated daily following this exception.

(Editor's note: This covered last Easter weekend. That means there will be no Classic Mini Pony of the Day tomorrow. I'll have a regular MPotD, and the CMPotD will resume on Thursday.)

Time For Revenge

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

(picture blatantly stolen from, then credited to, The Pensblog)

I'm not that pissed about yesterday's loss to Philly. How can I be, when we wrapped up a season that saw the Penguins secure the 2 seed in the East? Getting the 1 seed would have been a paper championship, and the team needn't focus on those with the grueling playoffs starting in a handful of days.

The real reason I didn't mind the loss is because our first-round opponent is set. And they're a familiar foe. The Ottawa Senators.

You may remember the Senators destroying Pittsburgh in the opening round of last-season's playoffs. Pittsburgh was on the wrong side of the 4-5 series, playing more games in Canada than in the States. The Pens won only one game, then hit the links early. If you hadn't prayed for this matchup in the first round of this year's playoffs, then you are not a Penguins fan. We need to serve up some revenge. Senators beware.

I don't mean to sound over-confident, just excited. The Sens will likely be without Daniel Alfredsson, which coincides nicely with the return of Senator-killer Gary Roberts. Also, I enjoy knowing that Ottawa played sub-.500 hockey since Christmas. Happy holidays, Penguins fans!

My head is nearly exploding with the possibility of destroying Ottawa in the first round. Now, they still have Spezza and Heatley, so I'm not writing them off before we even play a game. However, not having Captain Alfredsson makes MAF's job that much easier.

The puck drops in two days. All the accomplishments of this past season are gone. Evgeni Malkin is 100-some points lighter, and MAFer is looking for his first win of the season. Sid the Kid has two healthy ankles. There's blood in the water, and the Penguins have the scent.

Go Pens.

The Mini Pony of the Day comes straight out of the World Book Encyclopedia from like 1979 that's in my house. I looked up "Shetland Pony" with the hope of finding a cool picture. World Book '79 has yet to fail me.

Georges Laraque Rules

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

Too. Many. People. On. The. Ice/Floor.

In all seriousness, Georges Laraque is awesome. He recently organized a floor hockey game with a bunch of Pittsburgh kids to help support the Doorway Foundation, explained in the video as helping with people dealing with addiction.

Now, if I was a kid playing in this game, I'd be shitting in my britches just thinking about Laraque staring me down, politely asking to fight.

I can't stand when idiotic fans of rival teams continually call Laraque a heartless goon without knowing anything other than his role as a team enforcer. Please hate on the guy who just received the Edward J. DeBartolo “Community Service” Award for helping the local community and charities. Yes, he's a real bastard.

And that concludes my Friday post. Have a beautiful weekend. And be sure to check out Cotter's Meeting People Is Easy, for which I'm a panelist for the third straight week. I should see if I can get paid for this.

Oh, the Mini Pony of the Day is way too cute. I might start a new blog, entitled "Baby Mini Ponies and More Baby Mini Ponies." It would be worth it.

Sidney Crosby PWNED Darren Dreger Last Night

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

(For the record, I have no idea what pwned actually means. I just find it funny)

Prior to last night's Atlantic Division-clinching win over the Flyers (Pensblog recap here), some fool by the name of Darren Dreger wrote a blog post about Sidney Crosby.

Dreger mentioned that Sid doesn't have the goal-scoring touch of guys like Gretzky, Lemieux...or even Ovechkin. He name drops Geno, which surely calms the Pittsburgh faithful a bit, but levels unusually odd criticism of a 20-year old, reigning league scoring champion who just happened to miss more than 1/3 of the current NHL season.

Let me repeat. Sidney Crosby missed 34% of this season, and still, before last night, managed to score 22 goals. Sid obviously took this to heart when he marked half the team's tallies in the win against Philly.

Imagine missing 4 1/2 months at your job, then having some dweeb call you out for not putting together as many TPS Reports as the dude next to you who never takes a sick day. If that happened to me, I'd probably come in the next day, fire off a substantial amount of reports, then papercut the idiot with said reports for making foolish claims (no, I don't work with TPS Reports, but Office Space was the first thing that popped into my head).

So Sid upped his goal total to 24 in 53 games played. Throughout a full season, Crosby would have averaged about 37-39 goals. That number puts him ahead of guys named Alex Kovalev, Eric Staal, Rick Nash and Thomas Vanek. But just because he hasn't put up freakish numbers like A.O., Geno and Ilya Kovalchuk, Dreger finds the need to complain. Does he want the kid to do everything? Despite missing 1/3 of the season, Sid merely sits in 28th place on the season points list. And that's 23 points out of 3rd place. His career 1.38 goals per game would squarely put him in contention for a second consecutive run at the points lead had he not missed 28 games.

Oh...and backtrack much? Immediately following the game, Dreger issued a clarification at the bottom of the post. It comes off as sketchy, to say the least:

I stand by the fact I believe Crosby is far more comfortable as a playmaker, but the two goals he scored in a 4-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers helped solidify my point.

Really? Because when I read the post, it seemed like Dreger said:

..when it comes to burying those grade A chances, Crosby gets the A for average.

He says that his two goals were his best two chances, and Sid put them away. Now, if you're calling a player average, then him scoring on his best two chances does not solidify your point. It actually nullifies your point. Because "great" goal scorers put away their best two chances. "Average" scorers might go 50%.

Please sit down, Darren Dreger, and call out players who warrant criticism. Not a team captain who battled injury for a substantial amount of time, only to score twice in a division-clinching win.

Sidney Crosby > Darren Dreger.

Go Pens!

This is a shirt my sister got me for Christmas. It rules. It says "I <3 mini ponies" (it actually says, "I heart [picture of cool mini pony]," but you get the idea). It is right. Sorry for the horrible quality. To demonstrate where the mini pony is situated, I manipulated the picture with cool MS Paint:

I made the mini pony smiling, though. Maybe he just ate some miniature sugar cubes or something.

(Editor's note: This sister wasn't Sheena Beaston, it was other sister Kate...mentioned here. What a solid shirt.)

Political Dissent Among Steel Curtain Steelers?

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

Looks like politics break up the ties that bind.

From this picture, it appears both Jerome Bettis and Franco Harris are Democratic supporters. More importantly, they're Barack Obama-Democratic supporters.

Political endorsements have taken their toll on the Steel Curtain Steelers, as it seems. Back when (Republican) Lynn Swann was running for governor of Pennsylvania, the only hints of Steeler support came from this guy:

...and he was probably smashed out of his mind.

However, I don't know how long beatified bowler Bettis will be on board with Barack (The Bus is in the Bowling Hall of Fame). Especially after the presidential candidate recently posted a 37 at some lanes in Altoona.

Its fluffy. Its cool. Its tiny as hell. Its the Mini Pony of the Day! Every day, I get a new favorite mini pony. I sometimes think it can't happen, and I wont find a sweeter picture of a cool little horse the next day, but I seem to prove myself wrong. Now, I want this one as my pet.

(Editor's note: This is where I first started realizing that there were way too many mini pony pictures on the world wide web. I originally intended for the MPotD to be a joke, but saw that this was going to be a regular deal for the duration of the site. And now I'm roped in.)

BREAKING NEWS: Pirates Sign Barry Bonds

PSAMP HAS MOVED! CLICK HERE TO GET TO THE BRAND NEW SITE! NOW!

Massive news in the 'Burgh today.

Despite a double-digit run total in last night's opening day win over the Braves, the Pirates decided to upgrade their offense.

Knowing the team made little movement in the offseason free agent-market, the Pirates front office went out and signed Barry Bonds. A move like this should quiet down the constant bitching in the Pirates fanbase. We got a big name free agent! Whoopie!

Barry's agent was able to negotiate a quiet little deal with the Pirates, now that Roger Clemens is taking the worst of the steroids accusations. With the negative spotlight shifted, Barry was able to get back in playing shape and impress the team.

Bonds said he was excited to be back with his original MLB team, and wants to change the landscape that was altered when he left.

The NL Central is about to get good.
